The Letter to Write When You Don't Get the Job
Publication: The Ladders
Posted: November 2010
Don't get mad; get gracious. A follow-up letter after you don't get the job is so rare, you will stand out and it may lead to future recommendations or another job. It’s the gracious letter sent by the candidate who got passed over in the final hiring decision, thanking the hiring manager for the interview, perhaps asking that they keep the candidate in mind for future openings, or even requesting feedback regarding what the candidate could have done better or communicated more effectively.
Selling? Don't Forget Your Network!
Publication: Accelerated Business Results (ABR)
Posted: July 2010
Regardless of what you sell, there are undoubtedly people in your current network who need some of it, or at the very least, know someone who does. Yet we shy away from approaching people we already know, especially those who are in our personal circles, not wanting to mix business with pleasure. But what if one of your friends had knowledge of a product or service that could really help you with a problem or issue you are trying to solve? Wouldn’t you want to know about it? And wouldn’t you be glad to buy it from someone you already know and trust to some degree?

Consider the following. We care about the professional success of those we know, like, and trust, AND we are willing to put our name on the line for them (or at least refer them to others) because we are reasonably sure that they won’t let us down. Compare that to recommending someone you just met or whose name you saw on a TV ad. We might pass along the name, but we certainly won’t put our “seal of approval” on it.

Searching for a job in today’s market is difficult enough without sabotaging oneself. But, that’s exactly what many jobseekers do when they spend too much time trolling online job boards, don’t adequately plan the next steps or expect recruiters to find jobs for them. Avoiding a few pitfalls may go a long way toward shortening the job search.
Must-do Networking Tips for New Grads.
Publication: GradKin Blog
Posted: April 2010
As much as you might shudder at the thought, your career success will be directly tied to your willingness and ability to network. I’d go so far as to say that if you don’t learn how, and actively practice and build your networking skills, you won’t reach your goals. Your resume (and your shoes) may be polished to a shine, but if you are ignoring the fact that 2/3 or more of people get their jobs through people they already know, or people they meet in the search, all that shine is for nothing. We get information, ideas, resources, scoop, and new contacts from others in all other areas of our lives, so why should your career be any different?
Stop Peeing On Your Shoes
Publication: Inspired Mother Magazine
Posted: December 2009
According to veteran career strategist Julie Bauke, plenty of people are "peeing on their shoes." In this book, she outlines the seven big mistakes--including "not managing between your ears," spending too much time at networking events "but not really networking" and "forgetting that it's all about you." Even better, she tells you how to do it right.

The sooner you learn how to find a job, regardless of the economy, the better off you will be – today and throughout your career.
Do You Pee On Your Shoes? Book Review
Publication: Success Circuit
Posted: November 2009
There are two main reasons as to why I recommend you to buy this book (don’t worry, I am not trying to make you click an affilite link). The first reason is obviously content (after all Content Is King), every single word in the book is important. There is no “filler” content, the whole book is useful. Secondly, Julie has a writing style rarely seen in books… she is funny. Yep, a useful humourous book… impressive!
Network Much?
Publication: Career Hub
Posted: November 2009
No matter who I am speaking to- large groups or an individual- heads start nodding when I talk about how important networking is, yet how little of it we take the time to actually do. “Guilty as charged” their faces say. Kinda like eating more veggies. We really do know it’s good for us - but that rarely translates into those seemingly hundreds of daily servings we’re supposed to have.
Networking. You Gotta Do It.

How many times have you been told that you need to network? Bet you’ve lost count. And yes, you need to network. But before we look at the why’s and how’s, let’s get clear on what networking done well really is. Networking is the building of mutually beneficial relationships that align with our goals.
Employers digging deep on prospective workers
Publication: MSNBC Online
Posted: October 2009
Many managers are reluctant to give recommendations because companies are worried about being sued if they bad-mouth a former employee. And many employees are stacking their reference lists with people who will only say glowing things about them, even omitting employers from their resume who may have negative comments.
What is Work? Feeling Well-Paid From Your Job Search
Publication: Huffington Post
Posted: August 2009
Appreciate Who You Are! Mentally redefine "paid" as "beyond money". Figure out what your needs are -- appreciation, giving, spirituality, physical fitness, etc. -- and create ways to get those needs met while you are looking. Look to fulfill the needs that you tend to ignore while you're working. You will come out on the other end of this period of unemployment better, stronger, happier.

As a meeting professional, you know why networking is important. You've probably also picked up on the fact that no matter what industry you serve, there's an almost universal discomfort with doing it, and very few people who can actually do well. Even the most extroverted among us admit to at least a mild case of the nerves when it comes to attending a large event.
